I must confess that before I went to see this movie, I had already did my basic background research which included checking the following :
1) IMDB rating (currently at 4.0): If Rating is below 7.0, then go to step two (if its higher, i dont want to know anything about it till i see it)
2) Youtube movie reviews (non spoiler ones)
if Rating is below 5, then go to step three & 4
3) Spoiler Youtube movie reviews
4) Check out why people hated it in the "hated it" section of IMDB user reviews and some of the message boards.
Since the current rating of the movie is 4.0 it kind of implied that i had to go through all the four steps of my movie research procedure manual.. these were my expectations after my study.. (Why did i still go u ask??? Thats coz i have an unlimited monthly pass from cineworld (UK) and I didnt have anything to do this afternoon!!!)
Expectations:
a) This movie is the WORST MOVIE of this year,, it sucks more than the latest dyson vaccum cleaner..
b) Acting would be good but poor actors were stuck in an unseemly script. Pretty much like Liam Neeson in every movie after taken and definitely in the Phantom menace..
c) CGI is horrible especially given the standards of recent movies.. so expecting some B-grade movie kind of visual effects..
d) No motivation based action.. i.e you dont know why anyone does anything.. why is the Dr.Doom acting like the way he does..etc.etc
e) Its a boredom fest.. bad dialogues and lots of mundane moments
f) Rumors of director being drunk clearly shows in the movie.
So equipped with these opinions, I dared to enter the movie halls ... got my pack of nachos and prepared myself for the inevitable doom...would it be that bad?? would it be so disappointing?? would it be so bad that its actually very good. .. so I waited and waited.. but TRUST ME,, it WASNT THAT BAD!!! I am not saying its good.. but its really not that bad.. Its not good by any stretch of one's imagination but I will admit that I am intrigued to go see the second movie..(SPOILERS ahead)
Lets go over it point by point about things that didnt click for me:
1) Kid being a super genius at an early age and discovering some sort of teleportation device.. thats a bit too much even for a comic book movie especially for one thats trying to be realistic.. but I am willing to let go of this one..
2) Why is it that all the people working in the lab are 20 somethings.. there's hardly any older scientist type character about from Dr.Storm and that guy isnt even working in the lab for most of the movie...
3) Decent chemistry between Sue Storm and Reed Richards but wasn't explored in detail.. Johnny Storm guy seemed very out of place in that environment..Seems like they were confused whether to make him some sort of an engineering genius or a play boy like in the earlier movies.. this dilemma is clearly evident in the movie and gets more muddled with his daddy issues ..
4) Doom chap seems to some extent relate-able to reality. Guy who hass been shunned by a girl, who hates the govt and humanity in general, prefers isolation, is extremely smart and if given great psycho kick ass powers, might want to do some serious damage to people and property. I get that!!.. but what is weird or rather really unwarranted was the fact that he ends up killing Dr.Storm. WHY??? thought they had some sort of icy relationship but had some degree of respectability for one another.. so why would he want to kill him (only reason seems to be to give the main protagonists some final goal and act as a bonding event.. but it was a forced scene)
5) Final battle gets over before you can even get warmed up for a good fight. Its similar to say Neo killing Agent smith in the very first punch in the Matrix. If they had spent a bit more time on this climactic battle.. maybe things would have been a bit more different.
6) CGI: Its bad but not that bad that it makes you cringe.. its rather amateurish. Doesnt affect the flow of the movie.
7) Doom doesnt look anything like in the comics and looks very awkward.. His motivations ,though understandable to some extent, doesnt explain why he would kill his mentor. Also he ends up getting killed by something he himself created..so dont get that either.. But then if motivations are the reason to tear down a movie, then a lot of marvel movies too fall in that category.. namely (Ant man: Why does Yellow Jacket go to Ant man's home in the climax, rather than escaping.. why does loki want to take over earth (a worthless plant according to him)..)
When the trailers came out, I didnt like it.. and when the bad movie reviews came..I felt vindicated to some extent. But even I feel that the flack the movie is getting seems a bit too much..
Overall, its probably a 6/10 and not a 4/10 and I can honestly say if the starting logo said Marvel and if the entire movie was unchanged, it would probably have gotten a higher rating..
